Bio.
Lluis Mather is a Birmingham based saxophonist in his fourth and final year studying at the highly respected Birmingham Conservatoire. Originally from near Leicester, Lluis was raised through the Leicester Arts big bands, and was taught by saxophonists Dave Graham and Pete Lloyd. In 2004 he joined the internationally renowned Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra (unbeaten in the BBC big band competition). In this band he quickly matured, learning from the experience of playing alongside well respected guest artists (Dave O’Higgins, Henry Lowther, Stan Sultzmann, Jacqui Dankworth to name but a few).
Upon finishing his sixth form studying, Lluis continued his musical education at Birmingham Conservatoire, where he has been taught regularly by Mike Williams, Jean Toussaint, Julian Siegal and Hans Koller, and by visiting tutors such as Jeff Williams, Paul Dunmall and Mike Gibbs.
In the summer of 2008 Lluis set up his first band as frontman, which went on to win the 2009 Birmingham Conservatoire Dave Holland prize. Since then he has developed many other projects, and is soon to complete a debut album with his most recent ensemble, Noose, a project exploring the role of the voice in a modern jazz group.
Lluis will be performing with his quartet in both Cheltenham and Harmonic jazz festivals this year, and is a founding member of the Household Collective.
